Seven in the morning. The sun’s first rays gild the sand, the ocean is still sleepy, only murmuring softly on the shore. I sit down on a sun lounger at Fañabé beach, a freshly brewed coffee steaming beside me, and just watch as the world slowly awakens around me. This is the moment when I know: there’s no better place in the world where I could be.
Costa Adeje’s southern coastline hides two true pearls: Fañabé beach and Playa del Duque. It’s no coincidence they’ve been called “Costa Adeje’s golden shores”—everything here is dressed in gold. The golden sand, the fiery glow of sunsets, and that exclusive yet friendly atmosphere that permeates this stretch of coast.
First Encounter with Fañabé
I remember when I first arrived in Costa Adeje, I didn’t even know which beach was where. Heading north from Las Américas, the landscape gradually changes: the crowded, bustling tourist beaches are replaced by something more elegant, calmer, more refined. And then you catch sight of Fañabé.
Playa de Fañabé—to call it by its full name—is a wide, approximately 300-meter-long golden-gray sandy beach framed by two modern marinas. This isn’t the place for loud party vibes. There’s no constant disco music here, no tumult from morning to evening. Fañabé is tranquility, sophistication, and simply beautiful.
The Sand That Caresses Your Feet
I know this might sound strange, but sand quality matters. In many places in Tenerife, there are volcanic, black sand beaches—which are actually beautiful and special. But at Fañabé and Duque, you’ll find golden sand that’s been partly imported and regularly maintained.
When I first stepped barefoot onto this sand, I was surprised by how fine and clean it was. No stones, no shards, just soft, warm sand that caresses your sole like a natural massage. Kids love building sandcastles here, but honestly, we adults also find joy in simply walking barefoot along the water’s edge.
The Crystal-Clear Blue of the Water
The Atlantic Ocean here, off the shores of Costa Adeje, is particularly gentle. Not as wild as further north, at Puerto de la Cruz, where strong waves reign. Here the water is calmer, clearer, and that incredible turquoise blue dominates.
I started many mornings by going for a swim at dawn. The water temperature is around 19-20°C even in winter, and 23-25°C in summer—perfect. There’s no feeling like diving into this crystal-clear water, opening your eyes underwater, and seeing the sun’s rays filtering through the water’s surface. Sometimes small fish swim around you, occasionally a turtle appears in the distance.
The Promenade Where Life Flows
One of Fañabé’s greatest advantages is the beautiful palm-lined promenade that runs along the beach. Morning runs, afternoon strolls, evening promenades—this promenade is one of the social hubs of Costa Adeje.
You’ll find plenty of benches under the shady palms where you can sit, read, or just watch people. There’s everything here: young couples walking hand in hand, families pushing strollers, joggers, dog walkers, and tourists photographing the sunset in amazement.

Along the promenade are cafés, restaurants, ice cream stands. Sometimes I stop at a chiringuito, order a café con leche and a palmera pastry, and just sit, enjoying the moment. No rush. No stress. Just the sound of the sea, birds chirping, and that Mediterranean slowness that permeates the entire environment.
Playa del Duque: Where Elegance Meets the Sea
A few hundred meters north of Fañabé lies Playa del Duque—the “Duke’s Beach.” This name isn’t random: this stretch of coast is Costa Adeje’s most exclusive part. But don’t be scared, this doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible or overpriced. Just… more refined.
The Aristocratic Atmosphere
When I first stepped onto Playa del Duque, I felt as if I’d wandered onto a private beach. Wide, well-maintained, golden sand, white parasols in neat rows, elegant sun loungers, and in the background rise luxury hotels and apartment buildings.
The beach is smaller than Fañabé—about 200 meters long—but this has the advantage that it’s never crowded. Even in August, at peak season, there’s room, and you never get that stuffy, overcrowded feeling you experience at many other seaside resorts.
Services That Matter
At Playa del Duque, everything is meticulously thought out. The showers are clean, with modern design. Changing rooms, restrooms in impeccable condition. There’s sun lounger and parasol rental, but vendors aren’t pushy—discreet signs indicate where you can rent.
For watersports enthusiasts, there’s plenty to do: jet ski rental, SUP (stand-up paddle) boards, kayak tours. I had an afternoon when I tried SUP. At first, I couldn’t even balance properly, but then, when I was out on the sea, standing on the board, watching the shore slowly recede as the sun set on the horizon—well, that was unforgettable.
Gastronomy That Pampers
On the Playa del Duque promenade, you’ll find some of Costa Adeje’s best restaurants. These aren’t cheap places, but the quality is worth every euro. There’s everything here: traditional Canarian cuisine, fresh seafood, international fine dining.

Once I went to a beachfront restaurant where they served fresh octopus with paprika and olive oil—polpo a la gallega style. With it, a local white wine, and I just sat there, watching the waves, feeling the sea breeze on my face. The meal wasn’t just nourishment but an experience, meditation, celebration.
If you want something simpler but equally delicious, the chiringuitos (beach bars) offer excellent options. Grilled fish, paella, tapas—all with a view of the sea. What more could you want?
The Rhythm of the Day on the Golden Shores
One of my favorite habits became adjusting my day to the beach’s rhythm. I didn’t live by the clock, but by the sun and the ocean.
Morning: When the Beach Is Still Sleeping
Early rising. Around six or seven o’clock I go out to the beach. At this time there are hardly any people, the sand is cool under my feet, the air is fresh, not yet warmed by the sun. I run along the waterline from Fañabé to Duque and back. It’s about a 20-minute run, but these 20 minutes charge me with more energy than a double espresso.
Then a quick dip in the sea—refreshing, cold, awakening. I step out of the water, shake myself like a dog, and I already feel full of life. I walk back to the apartment, shower, and the day begins.
Late Morning: The Beach Slowly Fills Up
Around nine or ten o’clock, families arrive. Children run on the sand, build castles, run screaming into the water. Young couples spread out beach towels, older couples sit reading in the shade. The beach comes alive.
At this time, I’m already inside the apartment, working—yes, there’s still work even when you live in a place like this. But I know the beach is waiting for me in the afternoon, and that motivates me. Work goes faster when you know that in two hours you’ll be on that sun lounger too.
Afternoon: Siesta and Beach Combined
The Spanish siesta tradition lives on here in Costa Adeje too. Between two and four, many local places close, people rest, and the beach becomes a bit quieter too. The heat peaks—28-30°C—the sand is hot, you can barely step on it barefoot.
This is when I’m out there too. I have a favorite spot at Fañabé, in the shade of a palm tree. I bring my book, a bottle of water, a charged phone, and just lie there, read, occasionally go in the water to cool off. No agenda. No plan. Just existence, in its most primal form.
Evening: When the Sun Goes Down
The sunset on Costa Adeje’s golden shores is like a daily gift. Every day is different. Sometimes it’s flame red, sometimes pink, sometimes orange and purple blend in the sky. But it’s always beautiful.
People stop what they’re doing and just watch. Strollers on the promenade stop, sunbathers on the beach sit up, guests on terraces come out to the railing. And we watch as the sun slowly disappears into the Atlantic Ocean.
At this moment, there’s always an instant when everything falls silent. Even the children stop playing. And we just watch as another day ends in Tenerife. And we all know that tomorrow this will repeat. And the day after. This continuity, this daily miracle is what makes people stay here.
Why Are These Beaches Special?
You might rightly ask: okay, beautiful beaches, but what makes them truly special? Tenerife is full of beautiful beaches.
Well, I think the answer lies in the combination. Fañabé and Playa del Duque aren’t just beaches—they represent quality of life.
Safety: These beaches are constantly monitored, clean, safe. There are lifeguards, showers, changing rooms. Families can let their children play with peace of mind.
Infrastructure: Everything is close. Supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, bus stops—a few minutes’ walk and you can reach everything you need.
Community: This is where locals, tourists, digital nomads, retirees meet. This isn’t a ghettoized resort but a living, breathing community.
Quality: Costa Adeje municipality invests heavily in these beaches. It’s no coincidence they received the Blue Flag certification—which certifies water quality, environmental protection, and services.
Practical Tips If You Visit
If you decide to come and experience these golden shores yourself, let me give you some advice:
Sun protection! I’m serious. The sun here is merciless, even in winter. Always have high SPF sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses with you. Locals say: “tourists are always red, locals are always brown.” Which do you want to be?
Hydration: Always bring enough water. You can buy it at the beaches, but it’s more expensive. A reusable bottle is your best friend.
Arrive early: If you want to be sure of finding a good spot (especially at Playa del Duque), arrive before 9-10 AM. There will be space later too, but the best shady palm tree spots go quickly.
Try local foods: Don’t just go to international chains. Try the small family restaurants along the promenade. Order papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) with mojo sauce, or fresh grilled fish. These are the flavors that stay with you.
Walk! You can walk along the coast from Fañabé to Duque, or even to Las Américas. It’s a beautiful walk, and along the way you’ll discover little coves, restaurants, viewpoints.
Find Your Home Near the Golden Shores
If you’re reading these lines and the thought forms in you: “I’d like to spend a month here, or even more,” then I have good news. Costa Adeje is full of excellent apartments that are perfect for longer stays.
Imagine waking up in the morning to see the ocean from your terrace. You can have your morning coffee at sunset, and know that a 10-minute walk and you’re already on the golden sand of Fañabé or Playa del Duque. This isn’t fantasy—it’s attainable reality.

Modern apartments here offer not just accommodation but a lifestyle. Fully equipped kitchens if you want to cook at home with fresh ingredients bought at the local market. Spacious living rooms where you can also work if you’re remote working. Terraces where you can sit in the evening with a glass of wine and just enjoy life.
Costa Adeje, specifically the Fañabé and Playa del Duque area, is one of the best choices in Tenerife if you’re looking for a place where everything is within easy reach: beaches, restaurants, services, and yet that calm, refined atmosphere is preserved that allows you to truly rest and recharge.
When You Go Home, But Your Heart Stays There
There was a day when I was sitting at Playa del Duque, it was sunset, and suddenly I was overwhelmed by a strange feeling. Happiness? Gratitude? Perhaps both. I thought about how lucky I am to have discovered this place.
Fañabé and Playa del Duque aren’t just beaches to me. These are the places where I realized that life can be simple and beautiful. Where I learned that you don’t have to constantly rush, perform, conform. Where I accepted that sometimes the only thing to do is sit down on the sand and look out at the sea.
If you ever come here—and I hope you do—then you’ll understand what I’m talking about. The ocean’s waves, the fine sand, the golden sunshine… it all changes something in you. Makes you slower. Calmer. Happier.
And when you go home—if you want to go home at all—you take this feeling with you. Every time you close your eyes, you can return here. You hear the waves, feel the sand, see the sunset.
